Boat Communications Zoominar by CCA

CCA zoominar for Pac Cuppers

Your Communications: Installing and use

It’s 2026. Long past are the days of Morse Code or scratchy single sideband radio transmissions. Reliable, and (fairly) inexpensive satellite communications plus modern computers on board have opened up the ocean crossing to a wide range of weather, safety, and social options.

The Cruising Club of America is providing a zoominar to describe and take questions about these systems. Led by CCA members and long-time Pac Cup veterans Stan Honey and Michael Moradzadeh with other possible guests, the session will cover:

·       Selection of satcomm and computer gear

·       Installation and safeguarding from damage

·       Power requirements

·       Getting and using weather and other data: sources, what’s legal, what’s not

·       Pac Cup social hour online

Stan, of course, is an iconic contributor to Pac Cup and the sport of sailing generally. In addition to his many racing accomplishments, he has delivered many technical innovations to our sport such as SailMail with Jim Corenman, and the virtual finish line that delighted us in the 34th America's Cup.

Michael is Pac Cup's communications chair, a veteran of the tech industry, and an electronics hobbyist and programmer since the late 1960s (yes, he started at age 9). He served as the Pac Cup comms boat for most of the races from 2002-2012.
