Wind and Wildlife Words from the Fleet
Our fleet adds cheery information with their daily check-ins. Here's a representative summary that nicely captures the tone of the fleet.
Twelve Winded Sky: Another frustrating night with winds around 2 knots and swirling. lots of slatting. Unable to carry the kite due to lightness of winds.
For better or worse, we've chosen a southern route. we are having plenty of discussions about if that was the right move or not. either way we are committed now it seems. hoping we sail into better winds tonight and get a bit futher south before turning towards Kaneohe
Eskorin~: are dolphins snoring? At some point during the night we heard a bunch of mammals breathing heavily. It didn't smell like a whale and there were many: our assumption is that we crossed ways with snoring dolphins? Our friends from The Marine Mammal Center would most probably know better! Please support our fund raiser for them on Facebook (look for eskorin.sailing).
Spindrift V: the only things better fed than us on the boat last night were the endless string of whales feeding offshore. I know sometimes I get to breathing heavy when you drop a tray of wings in front of me but these guys were next level.
Chance: Slowwww night - but visited by wildlife all night long Seal came by & made our crew driving jump and we were mesmerized by the bioluminescent-trail. Then just after dawn we thought we saw a dark Sail. Turned out to be a pod of Killer-Whales checking us out.
See Sara for the video!
Surprise!: For Surprise! it's day two of the Big Sur-to-Kaneohe Race and day three of the race that started in San Francisco.
Total Eclipse: we have been greeted by numerous hungry and playful whales. Feeding and flipper flapping have been some of the more interesting things we observed from the beautiful animals!
Double Espresso: Wishing for more wind (today will be the day!) Lots of marine life including mr. "wise guy" seal who at 12:15am chose to surface inches from the boat barking madly. Probably laughing his tail off as the watch (me) just about had a heart attack. No issues staying awake for the rest of my watch.
