Kent Benedict, MD, FACEP

Dr. Kent Benedict is a graduate of UC Berkeley, USC Keck School of Medicine and specialty trained at Stanford University. He is an emergency physician and USCG Licensed Master(100 Tons). For 22 years he was the Chief Medical Officer for the California State University Maritime Academy's training ship, USTS GOLDEN BEAR. He held a clinical teaching appointment at Stanford University School of Medicine for 30 years. From 1985 to 2015 he was Medical Director of Emergency Medical Services(EMS) in Santa Cruz and San Benito Counties. He has taught Emergency-Medicine-at-Sea and lectured at Safety-at-Sea courses locally and nationally. He has written articles for Latitude 38 and authored the medical chapters in the standard US Maritime texts the American Merchant Seaman’s Manual and the Merchant Marine Officers’ Handbook. He is one of the authors of the World Health Organization’s International Medical Guide for Ships, 3rd Edition(2007). For 7 years he lived on and cruised his own vessel, the 50’ ketch, San Juan.  In his spare time he is a Caribbean charter captain.
