Alright I know it is the first day but still it feels pretty cool, especially after such frustratingly light winds. Our wind has generally been between 5 and 8 knots. It has gone lower and once reached almost eleven knots but those bursts were short lived. Also, the shifts were incredible. You would think that […] see the full post

And we’re off! Currently leading Alaska Airlines Division C (as of July 12, 2018)
You can follow our progress here: https://pacificcup.org/tracking.htmlFrom Doug Johnstone, the navigator:July 11, 2018 – 1401 Limitless has left the building!! Aloha! July 11, 2018 In my office for next, gulp, 13 days! Express 37 Limitless. Pacific Cup 2018. Weather is pretty much as I wrote about several days ago. July 8, 2018 I’ve been running routing files for nearly two weeks now. The fastest route I ran was 12 days 5 hours. That was much slower than 2016, but not too bad. Since then I have not seen a route under 13 days. When we started boat prep at the... see the full post

Position at 7/12/18 1300 33 55.68 N, 131 48.68 W, 1,561.2 NM to finishWarren writes:I saw a UFO last night. I thought I might be seeing things - hallucinations from lack of sleep and lack of anything else to look at. But I asked Tony and he saw the same thing. It was the one where a light moves through the sky at speeds and angles not possible by aircraft. From a dead stop, to zipping to another location, then dead stop, then up, etc. While we both saw it, and had several explanations of what it might be, neither of us thought it to be aliens or flying saucers. But, as we could not identify exactly what it was, it... see the full post

First night out dinner - ginger chicken with rice. And, of course dessert. Yes, as forecast winds are very light. We are getting set for a slow night.

2018 Pacific Cup
Prospector Racing to HawaiiThis Friday July 13, at 1445 PDT, Prospector will hit the starting line in front of the St Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco bay in the 20th Pacific Cup.The Pacific Cup, aka the Fun Race to Hawaii, is a 2,070 nautical mile race from San Francisco to Kanoehe Bay on Oahu, Hawaii.  The race typically consists of a short beat out of the bay under the Golden Gate Bridge. From there, racers reach across the top of a windless high pressure system and in to the tradewinds.  After that, the game is to time the gybe for several days of downwind surfing to Hawaii. Once clear of the coast,... see the full post

Navigation Decision
Position at 7/11/18 0700 35 59.74 N, 128 14.06 W, 1,770.4 NM to finish Warren writesWe made a big navigation decision today. We have been looking at 2 possible courses. A short course that goes straight to Hawaii and has light air, and a long course that goes north but has a constant 15kts. The computer says to go north. It looks like other boats have turned north. After number crunching and some onboard brainstorming, the predicted time between the 2 courses is only a dozen minutes. We are going against the computer's recommendation and taking the short course. The reasoning is that if we are wrong, we only lose a... see the full post

Vacuum packed!
We used space bags to save some space with our backup spinnakers. Works pretty well.

We had a good start. Larry’s strategy was good. Got all the way to the front of the start line toward sim land marks we had measured previously, then tacked right and headed for the north tower of the GGB. WE HIT 10 knots of boat speed as we crossed the start line. We passed most of the boats in our class before going under the GGB.
Our beautiful flag line became tangled in the back stays. With some effort we corrected this.
We changed head sails about 20 miles out as the wind increased that cost us some time. We have now caught with the fleet and are over... see the full post

Check-in 7/10 1510
Position at 7/10/18 1200 - 36 49.44 N, 125 51.50 W. 1,895.2 NM to finishWarren update as of 7/10 1510Here are two screen shots showing our positions as of 8am this morning. All of the other boats have now turned off AIS, so we are unable to track them, but get an 8am position report each morning. The big question, is how high to sail on this long reaching leg. The blue line is the computer generated course for Eliana. It is pretty far north of the shortest path to Hawaii. Eliana is the red target, and the shipwrecks are the other boats in our division. All 4 boats are well below the computer generated course. The... see the full post

We've got the "for sure we'll be using these" sails on board today and are waiting for the latest weather forecast to determine what additional sails we'll load tomorrow.Lists and more lists! We now have lists of the provisions on board posted where they are stored. For those wondering what we eat, here's the menu.  If we're out more than 14 days... see the full post

Check-In 7/10 0230
Position at 7/9/18 2300 - 37 19.10 N, 123 55.96 W. 1,992.0 NM to finishWarren writes:Please check spelling for me :) Typing in a boat that is getting tossed around-in the dark- is hard. It might make some people puke. Wind has been 20+ knots for the past 12 hours or so. We haven't seen less than 7 knots of boat speed the whole time. Ride is bumpy and very wet. The start of the race was only about 10 knots, so we needed the 130% to get out of the bay. Before the race I thought we might consider changing to a smaller jib while underway. So we brought it out on deck to have it ready so we could change it quickly. We... see the full post
