Sailing Instructions, Transponders, Skippers Meeting, Race Comms

One Month To Go

A boatload of information for you.

We just finished our final Board meeting before the race, and we have signed off on a bunch of things that are useful for you.  Most important is your race documents.  Skippers, some of the items below are mandatory (per NOR) so you'll want to be sure you notice them!

Note re Kaneohe Bay Chart:  The current chart is dated July 2007.  If yours is older than that, you do not meet the equipment requirements and may be penalized, if you survive the finish (things have moved)

Sailing Instructions

It took a while, because we wanted to get it just right.  The Sailing Instructions are now posted.  They are in .pdf form, though we hope to get them converted to regular web format shortly so you can load it onto your iphone or something.  Here is the link directly to the Sailing Instructions.

Communications Plan, and Testing opportunity.

Don't Forget

A key element of the race is the radio and position check-ins once a day.  This provides a simultaneous disclosure of position for tactical purposes.  You can download the Communications Plan here.  It tells you how to do check-ins and more.

This year, our Comms Officer (Michael Moradzadeh N6MDM) is riding on Valis, a well-equipped Pacific Seacraft 44.  Valis is going offshore for a shakedown this weekend, including shaking down the radio.  Hey, we emailed Corpus Cristi from the hard in the boatyard.  If you'd like to try out your radio at, say, 11 am on Saturday, send an email to PacificCup@Gmail.com to get on the roster, or just tune in to 4A at 11 am PDT.

Skippers' Meeting

1500 Check-in, 1530 program start.  At SFYC.  This will cover any last-minute race instruction changes, a weather briefing, comms review, satellite transponder distribution, goodie bags, and a briefing on how to get into Kaneohe Bay.

NOR says: "This meeting may include announcement of final amendments to divisions, ratings, the NOR or Sailing Instructions. Two crew members from each yacht must be present. Nothing relieves the skipper from responsibility for material presented at this meeting."

But be of good cheer!  The Blue Water Sailing/Mount Gay Rum Bon Voyage party is at the same place!  Did we plan it that way?  Yes we did.   Are tickets going fast?  Yes they are.  Are supplies limited?  Yep.

Satellite Transponders

Thanks to the organizational and research efforts of Vice Commodore Jim Gregory, we have contracted with FIStracking to provide satellite transponders for each and every boat at no additional cost to you (unless you break it, of course).  FIS has supported many major regattas, including Vic Maui 2008,   Swiftsure, and more.
These will be made available to boats doing the return trip for a modest fee.
Not only does the tracking create a really great viewing experience for those at home, it also provides an added safety element in the event someone needs to find you to rescue you or bring you cookies or something.  Please note that PER NOR and SI's, direct or indirect access to the sat tracking information by competitors is forbidden so as to preserve the fairness of the race.

What we'll need from you.

1.  A credit card number as a deposit (per NOR, collected at skippers meeting or sooner) to cover loss or damage to the unit.
2.  Someone to pick it up at the skippers meeting and then install it on your boat. (Three hose clamps on the stern rail)
3.  Turn it on the day before your start so we can verify yours works
.
We'll circulate more information as it becomes available.

Splits and Starts

We THOUGHT we'd have them today.  In fact, we have it 98.3% figured out except for a few tricky bits and the fact that about 7 ORR certificates are pending.  Here is what we can tell you so far, subject to change:
1.  There will be 8 classes including two Double-Handed classes. Probably.
2.  Starts will commence on Monday and will probably go all the way to Saturday, possibly skipping one day.
3.  It will be fun.  We will follow up and post as SOON as we know.

Blog

We are tracking a number of blogs from our racers.  Check it out at http://pacificcup.org/feeds/latest.  If you have one (preferably with an RSS feed) let us know, and we will add you to the River of News.   Folks love to read this stuff.  Really.

Party

Marina VIllage Party coming up July 9.  Vallejo Pacific Cup party coming up June 28.  I may have said a different date, but it is the 28.

Oh and hey, all tickets are will call;  You'll pick them up at the site of the event, okay?

Nominate for 2010

Okay, we want you to join the Pacific Cup Yacht Club.  This not only supports the race and our contributions to the sport of sailing, it also gives you a presence and a voice in the race.  Like now, for example:

Commodore Ickler has announced the nominating committee for the 2010 Pacific Cup:  They are Commodore Ickler (per by-laws), Charlie Roskocz, Paul Kamen, Jim Gregory, and Skip Ely. If you have thoughts or suggestions about who you'd like to see on the Flag or Board, you can email them directly or through our contact form (select "nominate")

A Lei for your Boat!

Friends of Pacific Cup sailors may now order this beautiful fresh lei for their boats and have it delivered at Kaneohe Yacht club docks to drape over and decorate the bow or stern.

Lovin the Lei!Volunteers from Koolauloa Hawaiian Civic Club and Kaneohe Yacht Club supply these Hawaiian garlands especially to welcome the yachts at the finish of the journey. Fresh ti leaves and lau‘ae ferns from the moist and sunny mountains and valleys of O'ahu form the base of a 12-foot-long lei to welcome your yacht. The scent of the land is truly welcoming. The garland is interwoven with colorful croton and tropical blossoms, depending on what is in season.

Check it out.  We love getting these!
